Mount Baker Wilderness
Mount Baker Wilderness

The Mount Baker region is one of our favorite places in Washington for a weekend getaway. Between the incredible hiking, cozy cabins, local restaurants, and seemingly endless mountain views, it offers the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation.

It is also a great destination if you travel with your four-legged friend! Many hikes in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest are dog-friendly, and there are plenty of pet-friendly vacation rentals around Glacier as well.

Our ideal Mount Baker weekend includes a cozy cabin (preferably with a hot tub or sauna), a big day hiking in the mountains, good food, and one final hike before heading home.

Here is how we would spend the perfect 3 Day Mount Baker Getaway .

Where Should You Stay Near Mount Baker?

For this itinerary, we recommend staying in or around Glacier, Washington.

There are very few traditional hotels near Mount Baker's best hiking trails. Instead, you will find cabins, chalets, condos, and vacation rentals, which we think fits the Mount Baker experience perfectly.

If you are hiking around Artist Point, Heather Meadows, Ptarmigan Ridge, Chain Lakes, Lake Ann, Heliotrope Ridge, or Yellow Aster Butte, Glacier makes an excellent base and saves significant driving compared with staying in Bellingham.

What We Look for in a Mount Baker Cabin

Cabin near Mount Baker
There are so many great short-term rentals in the Mount Baker area!

We’ve stayed in plenty of short-term rentals over the years, and along the way we’ve learned what makes a place somewhere we’d happily book again.

Our ideal rental for the Mount Baker area has:

  • A hot tub or sauna

  • A fireplace or wood stove

  • A dog-friendly policy

  • A deck or outdoor area

  • Easy access to Mount Baker Highway

After a full day hiking, coming back to a hot tub in the woods is pretty hard to beat.

Dream Cabins Worth Booking for your 3 day Mount Baker Getaway

We have stayed in several short-term rentals around Mount Baker, but availability has not always allowed us to book our first choice. Based on what we now know we value in a mountain stay, these are the cabins we would look at first for our next trip.

We have personally stayed at and can recommend these two dog-friendly cabins:

Camp North Fork - Pet frdly, King bed, Mt. Baker (Dog-Friendly) (Note: there is no hot tub; very cute decor though!)

What About Staying in Concrete?

If your trip is focused on Park Butte, Baker Lake, or trails accessed from the SR 20 side of Mount Baker, consider staying in Concrete instead.

For this itinerary, we are sticking to Glacier because it gives you easy access to many of our favorite Mount Baker Highway hikes.

A Few Things to Know Before You Arrive

Bring Groceries With You

Grocery and dining options become limited as you travel east along the Mount Baker Highway.

We recommend stocking up on breakfast food, hiking snacks, drinks, and anything you want to cook at the cabin before arriving.

Graham's Store in Glacier is helpful for forgotten supplies and basic groceries, but we would not count on doing a full weekend grocery run there.

If you forgot something, or realize your gas tank is getting a little too low, Maple Falls is a good place to make one final stop before continuing toward Glacier and Mount Baker.

You will find a couple of gas stations and small markets here where you can pick up fuel, snacks, drinks, basic groceries, and a few camping or hiking essentials.

Crossroads Grocery is a good option for light grocery shopping, while Maple Fuels and Kendall Market are convenient for gas and quick supplies.

Save Your Airbnb Directions

Cell service around Glacier and farther east toward Mount Baker can be limited.

Before leaving reliable service, save your rental address and take screenshots of any host directions, gate codes, door codes, and parking instructions. We also recommend downloading the surrounding area for offline navigation.

Some cabins are tucked pretty deep into wooded neighborhoods, and trying to find one after dark without service is not the ideal start to your weekend.

Day 1: Cozy Cabins and a Relaxing Evening in Glacier

Afternoon: Make Your Way to Glacier

Many short-term rentals around Glacier have check-in times between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m., so we usually keep the first day pretty relaxed.

Pick up groceries on the way, enjoy the drive along Mount Baker Highway, and arrive around check-in time.

Once you are unpacked, take a walk around the neighborhood. We love checking out the mountain cabins hidden among the trees, and it is a perfect way to stretch your legs and let your dog explore after the drive.

Evening: Dinner, a Fire, and Hot Tub Time

For the first night, we recommend staying in and enjoying your cabin.

Make dinner, have a drink, enjoy a fire if permitted, and take advantage of the hot tub or sauna. Maybe play a game... we recommend Dutch Blitz!

Before bed, check the weather and latest trail conditions and get your hiking gear ready for the morning.

Tomorrow is the big hiking day!

Day 2: Coffee, Mountain Views, and a Full Day of Hiking

Morning: Breakfast at Wake 'N Bakery

Start your morning at Wake 'N Bakery in Glacier for coffee and breakfast.

We love grabbing a coffee and breakfast burrito before heading out for a big hike.

It can get busy on sunny summer weekends, so Graham's Store is another option for coffee and a bagel if the line is intimidating.

Once you are caffeinated, it is time for the hardest decision of the weekend: Which Mount Baker hike should you choose?

Late Morning & Afternoon: Choose Your Mount Baker Adventure

We have spent quite a bit of time hiking around Mount Baker, and there are not bad choices. Check out our Mount Baker Wilderness Hiking Guide: 11 Best Hikes Ranked.

For this itinerary, we would narrow it down based on what you want to see.

Our Pick for the Biggest Views: Ptarmigan Ridge

Ptarmigan Ridge - Hiking with Dog
Ptarmigan Ridge in Mount Baker Wilderness

If the weather is clear and you want a full day surrounded by huge mountain scenery, choose Ptarmigan Ridge.

This is our favorite overall hike around Mount Baker.

At roughly 10.5 miles with 1,950 feet of elevation gain, Ptarmigan Ridge travels through wide-open alpine terrain with expansive views for much of the hike.

Some trails make you work for hours before reaching the views. Ptarmigan Ridge gets to the good stuff quickly.

Best for: Huge mountain views

Our rating: 91/100

Our Pick for Classic Mount Baker Scenery: Chain Lakes Loop

Mount Baker Views on Chain Lakes Loop Trail
Chain Lakes Hike in Mount Baker Wilderness

If this is your first visit and you want a little bit of everything, we recommend Chain Lakes Loop.

The roughly 7-mile trail with 1,750 feet of elevation gain combines alpine lakes, mountain passes, wildflowers, and classic views of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan.

If Ptarmigan Ridge wins for the biggest views, Chain Lakes may offer the most complete Mount Baker experience.

Best for: Alpine lakes + classic Mount Baker views

Our rating: 85.5/100

If You Are Visiting in Fall: Yellow Aster Butte

Yellow Aster Butte with Dog
Yellow Aster Butte in September

Yellow Aster Butte is our favorite fall hike around Mount Baker.

The trail is more challenging at roughly 7.5 miles with 2,600 feet of gain, but during peak fall color the surrounding mountainsides can turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow.

Best for: Fall color

Our rating: 83/100

If You Love Fire Lookouts: Winchester Mountain

Winchester Mountain Lookout
Camping in Winchester Mountain Lookout

For a shorter hike with a huge payoff, consider Winchester Mountain.

The hike is approximately 3.4 miles with 1,300 feet of gain, ending at a historic lookout with fantastic mountain views.

The catch is Twin Lakes Road, which can be ROUGH. Check recent road conditions before attempting the drive.

Sometimes the hardest part of Winchester Mountain is convincing yourself your vehicle should keep going.

Best for: Fire Lookout Photoshoot

Our rating: 68/100

If You Want Glacier Views: Heliotrope Ridge

Heliotrope Ridge Hike to Coleman Glacier
Heliotrope Hike to Coleman Glacier

Heliotrope Ridge is our favorite option for getting closer to Mount Baker's glaciers.

At roughly 5.9 miles with 1,400 feet of elevation gain, you get a lot of scenery for a moderate hiking day.

Access can change due to road conditions and closures, so check current conditions before planning your trip around this hike.

Best for: Up Close Glacier Views

Our rating: 75.5/100

If You Want an Easy Hike: Bagley Lakes

For beautiful alpine scenery without a huge effort, choose Bagley Lakes.

At roughly 2 miles with only 150 feet of elevation gain, this is one of our favorite easy hikes in the region and a great choice for less-experienced hikers or a more relaxed day.

Best for: Ease (and this is actually a great moody fall hike)

Our rating: 63/100

Ptarmigan Ridge or Chain Lakes?

Choose Ptarmigan Ridge if you want the epic mountain views and are happy hiking a few extra miles.

Choose Chain Lakes if you want alpine lakes, classic Mount Baker scenery, and a slightly shorter hiking day.

And if you cannot decide? That sounds like a good reason to come back. :)

Evening: Dinner in Glacier

After spending most of the day hiking, we usually have very little motivation to cook.

Gunners Tex Mex BBQ is a great choice for a hearty post-hike meal, while Chair 9 Woodstone Pizza & Sports Bar is perfect if pizza and a cold drink sound better.

Then head back to the cabin for some well-deserved hot tub time.

Day 3: One Last Mount Baker Adventure

Morning: Enjoy the Cabin Before Check-Out

Most vacation rentals require check-out around 10:00 or 11:00 a.m.

Enjoy one final slow morning, pack up the car, and then squeeze in one more adventure before heading home.

Late Morning: Choose One More Hike

Lake Ann in the Mount Baker Wilderness
Lake Ann in Mount Baker Wilderness

After a big Day 2 hike, we generally prefer something a little easier before heading home. But if you wake up feeling surprisingly fresh, there is no reason you cannot squeeze in another one of our longer recommended Mount Baker hikes.

Bagley Lakes: Our Easy Pick

At around 2 miles with minimal elevation gain, Bagley Lakes offers beautiful alpine scenery without committing to another major hiking day.

This would probably be our first choice if our legs were still feeling yesterday's adventure.

Winchester Mountain: If You Still Have Energy

If you wake up ready for another climb, and your vehicle can handle the road, Winchester Mountain makes for an incredible final adventure.

Check road conditions first!

Or Go Big One More Time

If you are still feeling up to a longer day on the trail, choose another hike from our Ultimate Guide to Hiking Mount Baker and make the most of your final day in the region.

Depending on the season and conditions, this could be a great chance to tackle Yellow Aster Butte, Heliotrope Ridge, Lake Ann, or another one of the longer hikes you did not get to on Day 2.

After all, if you have the energy and the weather is cooperating, one more big hike is not a bad way to end a Mount Baker weekend.

Afternoon: Pizza at North Fork Brewery

Before heading home, you must stop at North Fork Brewery along the Mount Baker Highway.

After a weekend of hiking, pizza feels like a pretty appropriate finale. Kyle likes one of their more unusual pizzas, like the one with salmon. I tend to stick with something more traditional. :)

Either way, it is a great place to relax and start talking about which Mount Baker hike you want to tackle next!

When Is the Best Time to Visit Mount Baker?

For hiking, we generally recommend mid-summer through fall, although trail conditions depend heavily on the year's snowpack.

July

Expect lingering snow at higher elevations, along with waterfalls and early wildflowers.

August

Usually the best chance for widespread high-elevation trail access, but also one of the busiest months, and you may have to deal with wildfire smoke sadly.

September - Early October

One of our favorite times to visit thanks to cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and fall color.

Just remember that the days are shorter and weather becomes less predictable.

Bringing Your Dog to Mount Baker

Chain Lakes Loop - Dog Friendly
Chain Lakes Loop - Hiking with Dog

Mount Baker is one of our favorite dog-friendly hiking destinations in Washington.

Many trails are located on national forest land and allow dogs, giving you more options than you will find inside many national parks.

Always check the rules for your specific trail and bring plenty of water, a leash, waste bags, and anything your dog needs for a full day outside.

Pair a dog-friendly hike with a dog-friendly cabin in Glacier and you have a pretty great weekend for everyone.

A Few Things We Wish We Knew Before Our First Mount Baker Trips

  • Download your maps. Cell service gets unreliable as you travel farther east.

  • Save your Airbnb directions. Screenshot addresses, codes, and host instructions before arriving.

  • Check forest roads. Some trailheads require rough-road driving.

  • Bring groceries. Shopping options around Glacier are limited.

  • Give yourself extra driving time. Glacier is close to the mountains, but many trailheads are still farther up the highway.

  • Have a Plan B. Weather, snow, and road conditions can quickly change your hiking plans.

What If the Weather Doesn't Cooperate?

Bagley Lake Trail in Mount Baker Wilderness
Bailey Lake Trail in the Fall

Do not let an imperfect forecast ruin your Mount Baker weekend. Cloudy skies can create some of the best moody mountain photos, and if the rain really starts coming down, grab a coffee in Glacier and embrace a cozy afternoon back at the cabin.

This is another excellent argument for booking somewhere with a hot tub or sauna.

And if you miss the mountain views? Now you have an excuse to come back.

Head Home and Start Planning Your Next Mount Baker Adventure

Your three days around Mount Baker may be coming to an end, but chances are you will leave already thinking about which hike you want to tackle next. That seems to happen to us every time we visit!

For us, the perfect Mount Baker weekend is pretty simple: a cozy cabin in the woods, coffee in Glacier, a spectacular day on the trail, a well-earned post-hike meal, some hot tub time, and one final adventure before heading home. By then, we are usually already planning our next visit and deciding which of the area's incredible hikes we want to explore next.

Happy wandering!
