Most visitors to Mount Rainier’s Sunrise area head straight for the more popular destinations like Fremont Lookout or Burroughs Mountain. But if you’re looking for a quieter alternative that delivers incredible panoramic views with a relatively short hike, Dege Peak is our favorite. While the name might not ring a bell for most visitors, the views here easily compete with the best in the park and with far fewer crowds.
This trail is perfect for a clear day when you want sweeping, 360-degree alpine vistas without committing to a long or strenuous climb. In fact, it’s one of the easiest ways to feel on top of the world in the park.

From the Sunrise Overlook Point, head to the west end of the parking lot to connect to the trail. A major benefit is that there is almost always parking, especially if the lot is full at the visitor center. You may need reservations to get into the Sunrise Area depending on the time of year and time you enter. These can be reserved at Recreation.gov.
It is steep but there is beautiful views the entire way which makes it go quick.
Mount Adams, Mount St. Helens, Mount Baker, and even Glacier Peak can be seen on a clear day. This is also a great spot to watch for marmots (they tried to snatch our backpack) and mountain goats which frequent this area.

Why We Love This Trail
Dege Peak is criminally underrated. While everyone flocks to Fremont or scrambles up Second Burroughs, this ridge hike offers equally dramatic scenery with far fewer people and a much more relaxed pace.
