We created Wandering Washingtonian to share the hikes, road trips, places to stay, and adventures that we have personally experienced around Washington and the Pacific Northwest.

We do our best to provide helpful, accurate information, but travel and outdoor adventures always come with variables. Conditions change, everyone’s experience is different, and ultimately you are responsible for making the decisions that are right for you.

Outdoor Adventure Disclaimer

We love hiking, backpacking, camping, exploring mountain roads, and getting outside as much as possible, but outdoor recreation comes with real risks.

Weather can change quickly. Trails can be steep, slippery, washed out, snow-covered, or difficult to follow. Roads can deteriorate. Wildlife exists. People get hurt. And sometimes things simply do not go according to plan.

The information we share on Wandering Washingtonian is based on our own experiences and is meant to help you plan your adventure, not replace your own research and judgment.

Always consider your own fitness level, experience, equipment, and comfort level before heading out.

Please hike prepared, carry the 10 Essentials, check current conditions before you go, and know when it is time to turn around.

And one of our favorite rules of the outdoors still applies: If you pack it in, pack it out.

Trail Conditions Can Change

One of the biggest things we have learned from years of exploring the Pacific Northwest is that conditions can change quickly.

A trail we hiked on a beautiful summer evening may look completely different a few months later.

Roads can wash out. Snow can linger well into summer. Wildfires can close entire areas. Permit requirements can change. Parking lots can fill up. Trails can be rerouted. And sometimes places close altogether.

The information in our hiking guides reflects what we experienced during our visit and what we knew when the article was written or updated.

Before heading out, we strongly recommend checking current information from the appropriate land manager, such as:

National Park Service
U.S. Forest Service
Washington State Parks
Washington Department of Natural Resources
Local land managers or park agencies

We also love recent trip reports because they can give you a much better idea of what conditions are actually like right now.

Mileage, Elevation & Difficulty

We include mileage, elevation gain, hiking times, and difficulty ratings because we know how useful that information can be when deciding whether a hike is right for you.

That said, these numbers are not always exact.

Different GPS watches, phones, mapping apps, trail routes, and even where you start recording can produce slightly different results.

Difficulty is even more subjective. A hike that feels moderate to us may feel extremely difficult to someone else, and the opposite can also be true.

Use our descriptions as one piece of information when planning your adventure, and always choose a hike that fits your own abilities and experience.

Accuracy of Information

We genuinely try to make our guides as accurate and useful as possible.

But we are human, and sometimes we may get something wrong. Information can also change after we publish an article.

This can include:

If something is especially important to your trip, we always recommend confirming it directly with the appropriate business, agency, or organization before you go.

Hotels, Airbnbs & Places to Stay

We have stayed in a lot of Airbnbs, hotels, cabins, and other accommodations over the years, and we love sharing the places we genuinely enjoyed.

Our recommendations are based on our own experience at the time we stayed there.

Your experience may be different.

Properties change owners. Amenities change. Staff changes. Prices go up. Neighborhoods change. And sometimes a place simply is not quite the same a few years later.

We recommend checking current photos, reviews, policies, cancellation terms, and amenities before booking anything.

Gear Recommendations

We also share hiking, backpacking, travel, and outdoor gear that we use or have experience with.

When we recommend a piece of gear, it is because we genuinely believe it is useful or worth considering.

That does not mean it will be the perfect choice for everyone.

Backpacks fit everyone differently. Hiking boots are personal. Sleeping bags have different temperature ratings. And what works for us on a rainy Washington backpacking trip may not be what works best for you.

Always research gear carefully and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety recommendations.
